The Red Blood Sucker ‘AN DEARG DUE’ — an ancient Irish Vampire legend!
Almost everybody knows and talks about Dracula being connected to Ireland due to Bram Stoker creating the character in the first place.
But, did you know, according to legend, there was an actual real vampire roaming the lands in the southeast of Ireland in Waterford? She is called ‘An Dearg Due’ — The Red Bloodsucker!
And, the story goes that she is buried near Strongbow’s Tree. When alive, and a real human being, she fell in love with a local peasant man, and her father was a local businessman & farmer or something to that effect. The father had ambition and he was having none of this love; this real love for the local peasant man. So, he married her off to an Evil Baron who raped her; tortured her; beat her up; and kept her in a dungeon-like setting.
Before she killed herself; she swore vengeance on her father and this husband of hers. When she was buried it wasn’t long afterwards her body went missing from that grave. Little did the father and the Baron know what was waiting for them: A Vampire back from the dead ready to suck the living blood out of them.
Hence, why she’s called, ‘An Dearg Due’ — the Red Bloodsucker! The Irish Vampire in Waterford. So be careful when you’re roaming the lands down there people because you might never return home.
There is lots of speculation that Bram Stoker was inspired by this myth and the Abhartach myth from the North of the country. People believe mythology means ‘lies’, or ‘falsity’ — myth means story and usually, stories have truth and a beginning event to them. And over time become mythologised for dramatic effect.
